Make Sure You Can Vote This Election

All Mississippi Mills candidates hope everyone who wants to vote in the upcoming election has that opportunity. There are a few minor flaws in the registration and voting system that all voters should be aware of:

  • The list of registered voters is not complete.
  • Some people who appeared on the preliminary list disappeared on the first list update.
  • Some working people who want to register find they can’t get away during office hours.

The list problems originate with MPAC, the provincial agency tasked with maintaining the voters list. Town staff is working hard to get people on the list.

The following gives workarounds for each problem.

A simple comparison of the voters list to a list of ShaunForMayor supporters showed that 8% of eligible voters in that sampling did not have their names on the list. To check if your name is on the list, phone 256-2064 extension 1 or email elections@mississippimills.ca.

The first list update, circulated September 23, deleted several eligible voters. Some candidates have alerted people they spotted on this list.

If you do not receive a voter kit with voting instructions and a PIN number by October 15, assume you are not on the official voters list.

To add your name to the list, you need to visit the municipal office at 3131 Old Perth Road during normal business hours and show a piece of photo ID.

Once the voting period begins, the municipal office offers extended hours where you can register: October 20 to October 24, 8:30 to 4:30, and Saturday October 25, 10:00 to 4:00.

In Pakenham, you can register and vote at the Stewart Community Centre on Saturday, October 25, 10:00 to 4:00.

On the final voting day, Monday, October 27, both the municipal office and the Stewart Community Centre will be open for voter registration between 10:00 AM to the close of voting at 8:00 PM.
